I'm a new guy but I thought I'd start a thread based on something Royce Icon posted earlier:

"As for those with families, it's their fault for breeding. people should consider the consequences before they fuck."

Now, I always get viewed by people around me as a cold hearted bastard for echoing the above sentiment. I don't know about where you guys live but around here shitheaded idiots are popping out clones of themselves at an alarming rate. If you haven't seen it, go the mall or even better a Wal-Mart for some of the best examples of DNA gone wrong.
I don't consider myself to be any great gift to humanity, I'm just doing the best I can not to fuck with anyone's good time while having one myself. I just don't understand the bizarre affirmation this country gives to people just for figuring out how to fuck successfully.
As I get older, people always seem to ask when I'm going to settle down, have kids. The truth is I don't want kids, not because I don't like them but because I don't see popping out a sea monkey as my reason for being on this earth.
Anyone else feel this way or am I just the angry hermit my parents worry I am?

Having children is a basic instinct. Evolution and all that jazz. For society as a whole, however, it may be better in the long run to promote social systems that encourage evolution. In this respect, you probably have a very healthy attitude. However, I do not feel that at this stage in sociological developement that this is a positive attitude. Simply put, it is currently better to take a more individual approach of trying to spread ones own genes. For this reason I plan on visiting a sperm donar clinic and jerking it as much as they allow me. This might not be possible though since I have a family history of mental illness. If this is the case, I will have a family of two children so that I can devote as much time to my children as possible, thus, in theory, increasing their chances of surviving and procreating.

Personally, the decision to not have children (at least not to be responsible for creating any) has been something I have firmly believed in since I was teenager. I got a vasectomy when I was 21 or 22 and still consider it one of the better decisions I have made as far as personal responsibility is concerned. A vasectomy means never again having to put someone you care about through getting an abortion (yes, I have been there).

In general, I feel that there are already too many of us on the planet. More than can really be supported without completely destroying everything else and while I can appreciate the aesthetic of some post apocalyptic scorched earth world (yeah, I'm an art phag what about it?), I don't see extinction of all other species as something to be proud of.

I also do not feel that it is fair to the child to bring them into this world, especially now with issues like peak oil, world war, economic depression, etc. staring us all in the face. There is also always the concern of what happens if your kid turns out to be a right wing Christian or nazi skinhead or some other repugnant thing.

Sure, I've had a good run (especially at the moment) but to get there I had to go through a couple of alcoholic parents, bouts of depression and other related unpleasantness. Functional families are by far the exception (from my experience) and I'm enough of an asshole at times to my girlfriend of 12 years that I don't think I have any right to be putting a child into that environment. I have trouble being patient with pets so I'm certainly not up to raising a child.

So yeah, I'm anti-breeder for sure.

Please Cereal Box Conspiracy - do not donate Sperm......please look in the mirror before doing so - lol.

Just kidding.

The downfall of the world was prognosed so many times....boring. No political ground for not getting children - we would have long been extinct based on that. Personal impatience - I buy that. I have a son and it is tough at times - he is seven and rebellious like I was - or worse. But it is fun too.

Personally I do not like children, I tend to find them very irritating. I do not plan on having children, but perhaps I will feel differently when I am older. On the other hand, I have found that the concept of people "poping out children" is somewhat naive. Usually those who complain the most about others overpopulating the planet are in an economic position where they could easily acquire the protection neccesary to prevent pregnancy from occuring. As Marx said, our personalities are created by the economic circumstances into which we are born. It is far too easy for people to dismiss other people's desire to procreate, especially when two individuals are not of the same class. The myth of no class system in the Unted States is exactly that. Thus, while you do not have to be sympathetics towards those who tend to "pop out kids left and right", you do have to look at it from a different perspective.

I've been contemplating a vascetomy myself actually. My girlfriend is on depo prevara, and I always use condoms, but theres still a chance. I think you have to be 20 or 21 here to get one though.

I got one, what a nightmare, I walked like John Wayne for weeks.
I'm not keen on kids, and I have a genetic condition which could pass on my blindness and deafness, those were my resons for the decision, my wife backed me up 100%.

As for 'popping out' kids, yeah, I see a fair bit of this happening. I consider it to be partly down to upbringing. I have a sister in law with two baby girls. All the toys they have are dolls with bottles, prams, cots, and it gets worse, they have toy washing machines, vaccumm cleaners, irons the lot. What chance do they have? I try to be an antidote, but I'm not there 99% of the time. They are being raised as future housewives and child bearers, makes me sick!

I work with kids alot but I'm not really wanting any either. I'm 31 at the moment and all I hear from family is "when am I gonna be a grandmother?" "where's the kids" blah blah blah.... a little annoying to say the least. Kids are cool but I don't think I'll be breeding anytime soon. I'll just corrupt everyone elses :)

Want to reduce the population?

Reduce the food supply. Only surefire way to do so.

Only have enough food for 3 billion people, eventually the population will level off at 3 billion. Rules of ecology.

...

Yeah, kids are irritating, but I'd at least like to have one.

here (I live in France as you may know) vasectomies are forbidden and probably due to our massive testosterone overloads they're regarded as something shameful and almost criminal... Funny, hey, the way different cultures handle non-breeding habits?

So basically here, women always are in charge of not having children, which sure must seem strange to you guys.

I found this answer when our families ask us where the children are: 'I don't know, we thought we'd be having another dog but for the time being having one is just fine' -families no longer ask the question now :-)

Hmm, there are actually 6.5 Billion people on earth right now; about 3 billion live very poor, 1 billion below powerty level.

Estimations on leveling off vary - between 7.5 and 12 billion people expected.

Population control only works in developed countries on its own. Whether you all personally like to have children or not obviously has nothing really to do with the problem as most of it is happening in places where people hardly have enough. India will be most populated soon and surpass China.
