comment :: Use of contact mics :)
Ok, I made myself some contact mics and tested them. Results here and set-up as photo (with exception of the tube amp that is hidden behind the sofa; its used to feed the microphone into the computer).

The first track is the recording, the second track an edit. Don't know which one I like better.......

Can you upload a larger res version of the picture? Hard to read the labels as is.

Hey Kai, I really like the second track. I should say though that this does not sound just like a bunch of contact mics feeding back. . .what all is happening at the mixing stage and on the laptop?

Cheers

Hey, you are very correct. I did what I usually do:

Original track gets splitted in 3 different ones and put on 3 mixer tracks in Fruity Loops. I use one for bass and pan that a tad, another for hi (make it a tad crunchy with some distortion, pan too) and the last stays basically as is (maybe a tad reverb and the such).

Highlights of the recording go into Goldwave and get a bit mechanized there - and also good resulting machines get pitchsfifted there with conserving the tempo option. All those go on additional mixer tracks with fade in and out and get some effects keeping them separate in the mix.

In the end that is like 8 or 9 layers at times - but it is actually pretty close to the recording and comes all out of it. Maybe I edit somewhat hefty, don't know. But some editing is really nice to improve the sound quality.

To the image, don't have hi res here, but it says:
Compi with audacity (for recording)
Boss MD II (MD = megadistortion)
Ibanez chorus/flanger
Death Metal (digitech)
There is contact mic on tv and fan
Blankita is the white cat
Fluffy the dog is licking his balls like always
Dirty socks also included.....
and a cable salad......

I kept the feedback levels low on this one, didn't want to shock the animals too much. Was a quite reasonable db level during recording, pumped up the tube amp though feeding into the computer to pretty brutal levels.....

That's a fun looking setup man! I'm recording a session right now so I can't listen to the samples but I'll definitely listen later today!

Here comes another track made with a similar set-up. Photos and description coming in here now :). Ok, the feedback in the track comes from the kid-toy right in the photo. It has a little speaker for contact microphone and a microphone itself. The feedback in the track comes from just bending the microphone on the kid toy backward and forward (its fed into mixer and the little amp). Together with Cooler-drumming and BBQ-drumming (recorded as described in sound of the week) and some other samples the track came to life. Cheers, Kai

BTW, a nice instruction for how to make contactmics can be found here:
