the dpm sx is the sampling frontend for the dpm sp...there is a stereo version as well,(sx2)...it has balanced as well as high z inputs...you sample into it and transfer to the sp via scsi, or smidi if you prefer...you can also sample through the sx directly into the sp's memory bypassing the limited (though expandable),memory...i find it more convenient to sample into a computer for processing, editing, etc. then zapping the finished samples into the sp via scsi...
