Of'course your opinion of a "musical instrument" is going to be subjective, just as reviews are subjective.
And almost everything about the Tritons are upgradeable
Like sampler Ram, PCM sounds, external Media options and the MOSS Z1 synth engine option.
But in my subjective opinion the Tritons are geared towards the techno/industrial/ebm/ambient. Some other reviews have stated that it has no good sounds where that is totally false it has several "filters" that allow you to adjust many different parameters of the sound after it passes through the filter. The sounds are sampled PCM (phase controlled modulation) but are of the utmost quality and I think that if you program the LFO's and the filters without the FX on you can really see what these tools are capable of, and yes the FX are great in this workstation! I think that they are they best I have heard in a workstation.
Don't be confused, Triton (without the MOSS) does not perform synthesis, but it does have some of the same tools that you would find on a synthesizer!
You can also combine different sounds in a program to get some totally unheard of sounds. And in this way you can create "your own" custom sound base. You can make this workstation almost sound like whatever you want! It can sound clean, cold, hard, soft, distorted, beautiful and kind.
Don't believe me and other reviews! try one out for yourself it is a musical instrument with a full blown Midi sequencer onboard and can do more than I can describe hear.

PS, this workstation smokes Kurzweils for indi/ambient/ebm
and ease of use! (my subjective opinion)
