the nord modular is a powerful modular instrument capable of F.M. , Subtractive , and Additive synthesis. one modular is multi timbrel, allowing for instances to operate at one time in mono. Two instances in stereo ,one stereo and two mono. voices can be allocated as desired.
the modular has external ins so that the modular can become a very powerful processing center.
I should point out that with in one mono instance a large number of instruments can be assembled and control from with in the instance by internal sequencers that can be slaved to an external clock.
all of the wonderful things that this instrument can do would all be for not if it did not sound great! the modular ships with a large number of excellent song basses organs pianos ,horns strings flutes ,dance synth sounds plus all the madness you could ever apply to a song.
last but not least is is very easy to use. all you need to do is understand the basics of signal flow (osc.-filter-amp etc.) and you can start designing your dream instruments.
when I first heard it, it was the sound that got me. though I thought is expensive it has turned out to be so virtual it has proven to be of great value over and over again.
Now that the Nord G2 is available I am probably going to purchase the G2 based on my experience with the Nord Modular. of all the gear that I own and use this is my favorite piece of hardware. Reason being my favorite software.
