feature :: Monster In Your Closet Interview
This is an interview with Jimmy of the goth/ coldwave band Monster In Your Closet I did about 2 years ago for a zine that never really went into circulation. It's pretty silly and primitive in some respects, but I think it's worth posting here, so here it goes.
Icon: This is Icon
Icon: im in between a lot of shit, so I may take awhile with the questions and so forth.
Jimmy: ok , im cooking dinner
Icon:Me too actually
Jimmy: i just got back from trade school, so take your time.
Icon:Cool. So you guys have been around since 98, right?
Jimmy: thats when we got together. We didn't start giging until around 2000. in 98 lilly and I were in the process of getting married and had been working on some synth stuff
Icon: was the synth stuff very different from the stuff you do now, or kinda in the same vien?
Jimmy: originally were going to be more ethereal, like Dead can Dance but it was sort of boring and I wanted to have a more aggressive sound. Plus we met Ryan
Icon: is that as the band is now, or have there been other member changes?
Jimmy: There was a guitarist that didnt last long, and a guy who introduced us to Ryan was going to do vocals whoshowed up for one session and they flaked out. So Lilly started to play guitar and I ened up getting drafted to do vocals.
Icon: How much diffrent does the band sound live in contrast with on tape? And do you use tapes or just go on as is?
Jimmy: We use a sequencer live and always have, so we use to sound pretty similar. We recently upgraded to a new synthesizer/sequencer so its a bit different. I can give you a gear list if you want
Jimmy: the old synth was and Ensoniq SQ-2, which was replaced by a Yamaha RM1X. Some synth leads I used a Korg N364 and/or a Yamaha TG-33, and an Akai XR-10 drumm machine. Lilly uses a Cort Les Paul with a Crate DX amp and Korg Pandora FX processor.
Icon: Damnit, I was at thunderpussy on saterday. I could of bought your cd then.
Jimmy: Ryan has various bass guitars but uses Zoom FX with a crate head and peavy stack. Actually TP hasn't carried our new CD. Since were a local band the want us to give then CD's on cosignment. I need to update the web site
Icon: ah. how do you feel about the current state of popular music ( raprock, creed imitations, nirvana and 70s rock clones, etc)?
Jimmy: I'll take them one at a time.
Icon: Myc is doing a cure tribute gig pretty soon, so whats your favorite cure song/ album?
Jimmy: I hate rap for the most part and most rap metal bands are just boy bands disguised really well. I did like Rage against the machine though but limp buscuit and the like really annoy me.
Icon: Sorry, I asked that too fast.
Jimmy: Pesonnally I like Head on the Door the best, ryan isn't really a Cure fan per say and Lilly I think its disentegration
Icon:: I like faith the most, myself. Of course, I havent heard them all so I cant say yet.
Jimmy: Thats a good album. It's basically Robert by himself and multitrack recording, which really impressed me because he didnt need any of the other guys.
Jimmy:: Pornography is real good too. the Cure album that is. Back to music top 40 sucks now as it always has, with few exceptions. Many the 70's rock clones are actually talented musicians. I respect most musicians of any genre but "pop" stars and "entertainers" who lip sink meaningless lyrics are the ones who really bug me.
Icon: Yeah. lip sinking can be a good thing, but not in the fake way they use it.
Jimmy: I would'nt even use a sequencer live if I could find a reliable drummer and about 2 more keyboard players.
Jimmy:and don't get me started on American Idol or any "reality TV shows. I refuse to watch any of that shit.
Icon: Yeah. I heard about that and it made my stomatch turn. Real world was bad enough
Icon: The only good season they had was with that puck guy. And that got boring after a few shows.
Jimmy: I havent had cable in years so I could tell ya.
Icon: Oh. I dont watch tv at all except for videos. It was one of the first seasons when I was like 9.
Jimmy: I do love cartoons and some sitcoms and police shows but thats about it. Actually I love COPS and AMW, so I'm a stinking liar. But COPS is hillarious!
Icon: I used to watch cops and amw on saturday nights on fox when I was little.
Jimmy: yup, nothin is funner that some drunk redneck getting arrested for picking up a crack whore two blocks from his own house.
Icon: Crime sketches still freak me out.
Jimmy: they’re still on Saturday.
I've always been a crime buff. I think if I would have been 6 inches to a foot taller I would have become a detective
Icon: Damn. theyve been there awhile. I find crime to be interesting.
I hate crimenology though.
Jimmy: Don't be suprized if there is a show like Running Man on TV some day
Icon: I wouldnt doubt it. Anyhow, This Is probably good enogh for this issue. I'd like to do it again sometime tho.
Jimmy: ok cool.
